'Jacques Ranciere or don't be enamored with power'
lecture by Magda Pustola

14th november 2007, 8pm

In her lecture 'Jacques Ranciere or don't be enamored with power' Magda Pustola will introduce the book 'The Politics of Aesthetics' by Jacques Ranciere, it's importance for the theories of art and politics, as well as it's reception in the Polish cultural scene. 'The Politics of Aesthetics' rethinks the relation between art and politics, reclaiming 'aesthetics' from its current, narrow confines, inherited after modernism, to reveal its significance for the contemporary experience of subjectivation.

Jacques Ranciere is considered to be one of the most important philosophers today, his influence compared to Ernesto Laclau, Jean-Luc Nancy or Alan Badiou. He is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Paris VIII where he taught Philosophy from 1969 to 2000. His work deals with emancipatory politics, aesthetics and the relationship between aesthetics and politics.

Magda Pustola (Pl) is a Phd candidate at the Sociology Department, Warsaw University, and a graduate of the Visual Cultures Department, Goldsmiths College, London. She is a writer, editor and curator, collaborating with the journal 'Political Critique' (Krytyka Polityczna), Wyspa Institute of Art, Gdansk, Obieg magazine and Ha!art Corporation.
